Warding Against Travel Thrombosis:|
The KENDALL* Travel Sock is designed to help increase blood flow in the veins of the legs and thus help minimise the risk of blood clot formation. Blood clot formation and poor circulation can be caused by extended period of immobilisation during travel by car, bus, train and air flight. Once a blood clot develops, it can break away from the vein wall and travel to the lungs causing a potentially fatal condition known as a pulmonary embolism.
Travel Thrombosis, Economy Class Syndrome, and DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) are all names for the condition that results from blood clot development in the legs during extended periods of travel.
The Travel Sock impacts Travel Thrombosis by providing the recommend pressure to increase blood flow and diminish the risk of vein damage or stretching by actually compressing the vein diameter. The enhanced blood flow helps reduce the ability of clots to form and the compression of the vein diameter helps reduce the potential sites for clot formation.

- Physician-recommended compression. A 20-30mmHg compression is appropriate to help blood flow overcome the hydrostatic pressure in the leg which results from sitting for a long period of time.
- Promotes healthy leg circulation to help prevent blood clots. Compression socks help overcome two of the three factors that lead to the formation of clots: pooling blood (stasis) and vein wall damage. Extended immobility may result in blood pooling and stretching of the vein walls and cause little cracks in the tissue. It is these exposed areas that create a home for a clot to form.
The application of a certain level of compression to the leg has been proven to actually reduce the diameter of the veins in the leg thus eliminating potential sites for a clot to form and minimising vessel wall damage.
- Relieves leg swelling and associated discomfort. When walking, the muscles in the leg (calf and thigh) act as pumps propelling blood and fluid up the leg back to the heart. During periods of immobility, these mechanisms become inactive. For extended periods of immobility, feet and ankles tend to become swollen.
The application of compression to the lower leg helps to replace the action of the calf muscle pump, therefore, reducing the swelling and increasing blood flow.
- Level of Compression. A 20-30mmHg compression helps blood flow overcome the hydrostatic pressure in the leg which results from sitting for a long period of time. This greatly minimises the swelling of the leg and the risk of travel thrombosis.

- Non-occlusive band at the knee. Kendall Travel Sock will not create a tourniquet effect in the knee area. The Travel Sock is knitted with a 1-inch (2.5cm) band at the top of the sock. This band is lower in pressure than the rest of the sock to minimize pressure in the knee area. The width of the band is important to not only help the sock stay up but to eliminate the sharp cutting pressure of a thin band. Any sock that leaves a red indentation mark around the leg, as a result of the elastic at the top of the sock, is not recommended.
- Proper fit or sizing. Standard socks are usually sized based on fitting the foot so the use of shoe size is a great guideline. To properly size a compression sock, leg anatomy is taken into consideration rather than foot size. Using leg measurements when sizing is critical to obtaining the benefit of a compression sock!
